4 Reasons the Nintendo 3DS Could Change Everything

This morning Nintendo answered the two most urgent questions gamers had about its 3DS handheld: "When would it be available?" and "How much would it cost?" The company suggested a March 2011 release date months ago, to follow the official Japanese rollout in late February. It wasn't a surprise, then, to learn that March 27 is D-Day (or '3D-day') for those of you waiting--not patiently--to put the world's first totable 'glasses-free' 3D handheld through its paces.

Pricing on the other hand surprised several. Cynics expecting Nintendo to price the 3DS out of the market at $300 or even $350 were probably disappointed to discover it'll only cost $250 to get your hands on one. Sure, that's what the PSP Go cost as launch, but Sony's disc-free mini-PSP was functionally a step down from the PSP 3000, which at the time cost $80 less (it's still bizarrely $30 cheaper).

Bristling with new tech, from accelerometers and gyroscopes to wireless auto-communication algorithms to the eyewear-free 3D widescreen itself, Nintendo's 3DS is by contrast an epic step up from the $150 DSi in every way.

3D is just the beginning. What do you get when you merge an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a 3D widescreen, a separate touch screen, a 3D camera, an analog input nub, wireless that works when the device is either awake or asleep, and a bunch of communication algorithms that allow two 3DS units to wake up when near each other and exchange information automatically? A device that transcends the label "video games handheld." Welcome to a world in which pocket-sized devices change how you see reality, and memes can create themselves.

It's a library of lifestyle features in an 8 ounce piece of plastic. Want a workout without a Wii? Try the preinstalled fitness app that converts the 3DS into a pedometer and hands out points for getting off your duff and moving around. How about a chat with friends, or an opportunity to make new ones? Pop the thing open and scan for nearby 3DS owners, or just leave it closed and it'll scan for other units to exchange information with anyway. What about fooling with reality itself? Aim the 3D camera at objects in your environment and watch the 3DS transform them into thingamabobs you can fiddle with. "Augmented reality"? Here we go.

It's a portable powerhouse. The PSP--no hardware slouch--pushes pixels on a single 480 x 272 screen. The 3DS pushes visual data around two screens, and if we're counting the 3D split for each eye, three. The top screen's 800 x 240 pixels (400 x 240 pixels per eye) while the bottom's 320 x 240. Contrast with the DSi's paltry 256 x 192 pixels per screen. 3D movies (I demoed a copy of How to Train Your Dragon) stream from SD cards without a hitch, and games like Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D (also demoed) looked as sharp and environmentally complex as anything on the PSP.

It does full 3D without junk on your face. Five years ago, Richard Marks (the EyeToy guy, not thepop artist) told me that future mass-scale interface advances belonged to the least obtrusive ideas. Stuff you have to wear on your head? Chunky fashion-depraved glasses? Forget about it. When it comes to lifestyle technology--especially 3D--people want solutions without head-dongles. The 3DS somehow pulls it off. I've seen it myself. It works without blinking, squinting, or--as with those once trendy 3D stereograms--playing ocular relaxation games to get the hidden 3D images to pop. Nintendo claims the 3DS will take 3D mainstream. Believe it.

Free vs. Fee: Free and Paid Antivirus Programs Compared

Can free antivirus software protect you? Or is it worth paying for a full-blown A/V app? We look at the benefits--and pitfalls--of free and paid antivirus products.

Depending on whom you ask, paying for antivirus software is either a good investment or a total ripoff. In reality, neither viewpoint is accurate. You can find plenty of good reasons to choose a paid antivirus product, and plenty of good reasons to go with a freebie.

We teamed up with security testing company AV-Test, to find out what you get--or don't get--with free antivirus, and when it makes sense to subscribe annually to a fee-based program.

Antivirus, Deconstructed

Four basic levels of antivirus products exist: free, paid antivirus, suites, and "premium" suites. As you move up the ladder from free antivirus to premium suites, you typically get more features, such as identity theft protection, firewalls, parental controls, and system performance tools.

Free antivirus software usually provides a bare minimum level of protection. It will scan for malware, and often can perform automatic scans, too. Some free apps may have additional protection tools such as a browser add-on that checks for bad links--and Comodo's free Internet Security Premium has a firewall. But such features are usually limited to paid antivirus products. Some free apps offer behavioral malware detection, which finds malware based on how it acts on your PC--a good way of detecting brand-new malware outbreaks. (Behavioral detection is standard on paid products.)

Paid antivirus straddles a middle ground between the basic freebies and the feature-packed security suites: They typically offer more comprehensive security tools (such as parental controls and identity theft protection) and more flexibility than a free antivirus package, but they have fewer additional features than suites, which are intended to be one-stop security shops.

One of the biggest drawbacks to going with a free product is the lack of technical support. While most companies offer some sort of phone support for paying customers, free antivirus users usually must fend for themselves. Avast does offer e-mail support for its free customers; most others provide only a knowledge base or forum where users can go for help.

Another tradeoff is that free antivirus products often have some sort of advertisement for the company's paid product. Avast Free Antivirus has an upgrade link in the upper-right corner of the main window, and Avira AntiVir Personal will display an ad for Avira's paid antivirus software.

How about malware signature updates? The security software companies I spoke to tell me that they treat their free and paid products the same as far as signature updates are concerned, although there may be some under-the-hood differences between their free and paid products (as is the case with Panda's software, for example). And one company, Avast, says that its free product is intended for average users, and that its paid antivirus is for more advanced users.

On the other hand, free products do give you some flexibility. You can augment a free tool's basic security with countless security utilities. For instance, you can start with Avast Free Antivirus, add PCTools's Threatfire Free (which does a good job at bolstering malware detection), toss in one of themany firewalls available and a link-scanning utility to create your own custom security setup. This approach does require you to do your homework, though, and may be more complicated in the long run.

Interface

User interfaces are typically as good (or as bad) in free products as they are in their paid counterparts. Avira and Avast, for example, use the same basic interface for their free and paid versions; they just include or leave out certain features and toggles as needed. Panda Cloud Antivirus (a freebie) is not a scaled-down version of the paid Panda Antivirus Pro, but rather a completely different product with a different interface and different internals.

Detection

Most of the free products we tested put up identical or nearly identical malware detection scores to the paid varietals put out by the same company. But we did see some subtle differences. One notable example is Panda Cloud Antivirus: The free Cloud Antivirus and Panda's for-pay Antivirus Pro 2011 performed about the same on the signature-based malware detection tests, but Antivirus Pro did a better job in "real world" malware detection tests that help determine how well a product can block brand-new threats.

(Note: Panda recently released version 1.3 of Panda Cloud Antivirus. The company says that version 1.3 should improve its detection of new malware, but the new release didn't come in time for us to test for our roundup. Check back here for future updates.)

We found that, on the whole, paid antivirus products did a slightly better job at detecting malware than their freebie counterparts. In traditional signature-based detection tests, paid antivirus software that we tested found 96.2 percent of the malware samples overall. By comparison, free products' scores were ever-so-slightly worse, detecting 95.7 percent of samples.

In real-world detection tests, free products missed 15.2 percent of samples, while paid products missed 10.2 percent of samples. When it came time to remove malware infections, again, the results were close, but paid antivirus software held a slight advantage.

All the products we tested--both paid and free--detected all the test infections we threw their way, but paid products did a slightly better job overall at removing the active components of an infection, scoring a 74 percent success rate on average. The same held true when we tested how well the products removed all active and inactive components of an infection: Paid products achieved a 44 percent removal rate in this test, while free products averaged a full removal rate of 34 percent

Speed

Although you lose some effectiveness against malware with free antivirus, you do gain a little speed. The free products we looked at were faster on average than the paid products in 9 of the 12 speed tests we take into account. Again, the difference was slight--the largest speed difference was around 10 percent. Both free and paid antivirus increased system startup times: A test PC with no antivirus software installed booted up in 40.1 seconds on average. With free antivirus installed, the test system started up in 44.1 seconds on average; and with paid antivirus installed, startup times increased to 46 seconds. It's hard to pin down the exact reason for this difference, but again, the difference is slight enough that it's basically statistically insignificant.

Scan speeds, however, are a mixed bag. In our on-demand scan tests, paid antivirus programs edged out the freebies, scanning 4.5GB worth of files in an average of 2 minutes, 25 seconds. Free products, by comparison, completed the same test in an average of 2 minutes, 44 seconds.

Free and paid products were nearly neck and neck in the on-access scan tests, which show how quickly the software can scan files for malware when they're opened or saved to disk. Using the same 4.5GB of files, free products completed the on-access scan test in an average time of 4 minutes, 50 seconds. Their paid counterparts completed the test 8 seconds later.

Top Picks

Given how close the two classes of products are in terms of speed and effectiveness, the two biggest factors are features and customer support. With some exceptions, you get better customer support and more comprehensive security features with a paid product, but if you're willing to forgo these, it's definitely worth considering going free.

Which free and paid antivirus products are best for you?

Avast Free Antivirus comes out tops among free products thanks to its all-around strong malware-detection scores, good design, and low system drag. Avira AntiVir Personal takes second place: It put up solid malware-detection scores, but its interface is kludgy.

Norton Antivirus leads the paid-software pack owing to its excellent malware detection, very good interface design, and comprehensive feature set that includes file-reputation analysis, a cloud-based scanner (which can help identify new malware more quickly), and system performance analysis tools.BitDefender Antivirus Pro 2011 is a close second thanks to strong malware detection; but slow scan speeds and some interface issues prevented it from taking first.

Top Free Antivirus: Avast

Avast Free Antivirus couples good all-around malware detection with a speedy, well-designed package. We liked its easy installation process, smooth interface design, and minimal impact on system performance.

In traditional signature-based malware tests, Avast Free Antivirus detected 94.8 percent of samples, which is neither particularly good nor bad. It also did a decent, though not outstanding, job at detecting malware in our real-world malware detection tests: It completely blocked 76 percent of attacks (which is right about average), and partially blocked 4 percent of attacks.

But on the plus side, Avast Free Antivirus didn't falsely identify a single "safe" file as a piece of malware, the only free product we looked at that achieved this. Avast Free Antivirus also did a good job at disinfecting a PC; it removed all active components of malware infections 80 percent of the time, which set the pace among the free products we looked at.

Scan speeds are also very good. Its on-demand scan speed of 90 seconds was a close second to Avira AntiVir Personal, which completed the test in 87 seconds. And Avast Free Antivirus completed the on-access scan speed tests in 3 minutes, 40 seconds, tops among the products we tested.

Top Paid Antivirus: Norton Antivirus 2011

Norton Antivirus 2011 ($40 for a one-year, single-PC license as of 10/26/2010) leads the pack of 2011 paid antivirus products. It does a very good job at detecting and removing malware, and has a smooth interface, although its speed is decidedly average.

Installing Norton Antivirus 2011 is a breeze: The well-designed installer only requires you to click through two screens before it begins installing. Norton Antivirus has a smooth, polished interface: The main screen shows on-off toggles for its various protection features, as well as a map showing the global cybercrime activity over the last 24 hours.

When it came to malware detection and removal, Norton Antivirus put out strong all-around scores. Norton Antivirus detected 98.7 percent of malware samples using traditional signature-based malware detection. This is an above average score, but it trails Panda Antivirus Pro 2011, which detected 99.8 percent of samples.

Norton also put up excellent scores in the blocking of real-world malware attacks: Norton completely blocked 24 of the 25 samples we threw at it, but it did miss one sample completely. Norton also detected all active infections in our tests; it removed the active components of an infection 80 percent of the time, and was able to completely remove the infections 60 percent of the time--both above-average scores.

Norton put up good scores in our speed testing, but not top-notch results. It completed an on-access scan of 4.5GB of files in 4 minutes, 32 seconds. This puts it ahead of the average of 4 minutes, 59 seconds, but but it behind the top-performing product, which completed this test in 3 minutes, 35 seconds. Its on-demand scan speed of 2 minutes, one second is also above average, but again, it trails the top performing program by a good 30 seconds

What will telecom do in 2011: shake hands or continue the battle?

VietNamNet Bridge – Experts believe that the year 2011 will witness a new stage of development in the telecom market with telecom companies shaking hands to co-exist and develop side by side instead of fiercely competing by lowering charges.

Large scale development of 3G technology has been considered as one of the most important breakthroughs in Vietnam’s telecom industry in 2010. According to Nguyen Manh Hung, Deputy General Director of the Military Telecom Company Viettel, Vietnam has built up the largest 3G infrastructure in ASEAN.

“To date, Viettel alone has set up 20,000 3G base transceiver stations nationwide. Meanwhile, Thailand still has not granted us a license for 3G services, while the Philippines and Malaysia have been developing 3G for the last many years, but the number of transceiver stations remains modest,” Hung said.

However, the development of 3G technology has pushed the telecom market into a fiercer competition in the last year. The wave of lowering charges and offering sale promotions has led to a situation in which the mobile service charges have been lowered to the levels dangerously close to production costs. This has forced the Ministry of Information and Communication to tighten the promotion activities by releasing the Circular No 11, stipulating that service providers could only slash the charges by 15 percent at maximum in 2010.

Commenting on stiff competition on the mobile telecom market in 2010, amanager of a small service provider said that the three biggest companies already hold 90 percent of the market share. Therefore, the pieces of the market left for them are very small, which explains why it is very difficult for them to attract more subscribers.

Though they have modest revenue, small service providers still have to spend money to run promotional campaigns. Therefore, they are facing financial difficulties, making them unable to continue the price slashing race. Even the three giants on the market have also suffered from the stiff competition.

The bad consequence of the stiff competition is that Vietnam’s telecom market bears signs of unsustainable development.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Le Nam Thang also admitted that Vietnam’s telecom has expanded considerably in the last 10 years, but there have been signs of unsustainable development. This can be seen in the decreasing figures in profit turnover, investment capital and tax payments by telecom companies to the state.

In 2011, mobile virtual network operators MVNO like Indochina Telecom, VTC and FPT will officially provide services to the market. The operators will purchase wholesale the capacity from the infrastructure developers such as Viettel, MobiFone and VinaPhone and then retail to clients under their brands.

In another move, in 2011 as small service providers cannot continue the battle with big providers, they will try to “shake hands” with the partners with high financial capability in order to leverage their strengths. The trend was initiated by EVN Telecom in 2010 when the operator sold 66 percent of its chartered capital to FPT. With the affair, EVN Telecom got 3000 billion dong to invest in the 3G infrastructure.

It is expected that in 2011, similar cooperative deals will be made, including deals between CMC and VTC to develop 4G/LTE technology, or between SPT and a partner in the S-Fone project.

“The convergence of telecom, broadband Internet, broadcasting and televising will be more clear in 2011, with telecom and multimedia entertainment services to be developed. With 3G technology and 4G/LTE technology in the near future, operators not only provide connection services, but will also provide other services to consumers and enterprises,” said Jan Wassenius, General Director of Ericsson Vietnam.

Apple Maintains Its Sanctimonious Streak by Denying Playboy

iPad-wielding prudes, take heart: Apple is holding tight to its "no nudes is good nudes" policy and has no intention of letting girly-magazine purveyor Hugh Hefner soil the pristine Apple App Store with a filthy native app for viewing uncensored past and present issues of Playboy.

That news might come as a disappointment, though, for on-the-go oglers who were titillated by reports of an iPlayboy app on the way. That news was spawned by none other than Hef himself via Twitter: "Big news! Playboy -- both old & new -- will be available on iPad beginning in March." A follow-up tweet asserted the issues would be uncensored.

It ain't quite so; it turns out Playboy is going to roll out a service through which users can access the Playboy archives via the Internet -- a move that falls under the category of too little, too late for a publishing company whose value has dwindled from $1 billion in 1999 to around $210 million today. Per Playboy, "The service will be iPad compatible and will utilize iPad functions." The functions aren't clear. Touch, perhaps?

Additionally, Playboy plans to create a native app for the Apple App Store through which users can access censored versions of Playboy. Reportedly, the magazine contains articles, along with risqué jokes that presumably are acceptable, in Apple's view, for its customers to consume.

This comedy of errors marks the latest chapter in Apple's vain and self-defeating effort at playing protector of the masses. The company has two choices: It can accept the fact that some of its customers do, in fact, want to view exposed body parts on their devices, whether it's full-frontal nudity or a pixelated naughty bit in a graphic novel version of classic literature. Whatever the case, Apple can help meet the demand by letting providers create native apps to give users a smooth, nonbuggy, and possibly more secure viewing experience. That, after all, is the point of offering native apps rather than delivering everything through browsers.

The other option -- and it looks like Apple is sticking to this road -- is to continue blithely disregarding customer demands in an ongoing display of misdirected sanctimony. Apple is telling customers, "You might want a certain type of perfectly legal content on a device you bought from us, and there might be companies that are willing to present you with that content in a format that is optimized for that device. Sure, you can still view it on the device via our Safari Web browser, which does support the Web version of the content. It just won't look as good. So there."

iPad 2 Won't Have 2048 by 1536 Resolution--But iPad 3 Might

It's unlikely the rumored iPad 2 tablet will have a screen resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels--four times that of the current 1024-by-768 iPad. But future iPads might, according to research firm IDC.

Citing sources from component manufacturers, Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes reported Thursday that Apple will boost the iPad 2's resolution to "widen the company's technology gap with its competitors." Apple will begin mass production of the iPad 2 by the end of February, the report states.

But IDC research manager Tom Mainelli believes the 2048 by 1536 prediction is premature.

"I think the Digitimes story probably got the resolution right, but the iPad version wrong," Mainelli toldPCWorld via e-mail. "Our sources say Apple has requested that manufacturers begin work on displays with that resolution for the iPad 3."

"I don't believe anybody is ready to produce that resolution in volumes at this point. And Apple is going to require huge volumes for the iPad 2," he added.

Media tablet shipments will grow from about 17 million units in 2010 to 44.6 million units in 2011, IDC forecasts. Apple iPads made up 90 percent of the tablet volume in Q3 2010.

"We expect Apple to continue to own the lion's share of that market in 2011," Mainelli wrote.

Details on Apple's next-generation tablet, which may ship as early as April, continue to trickle out from numerous sources. An AppleInsider story earlier this week said the iPad 2 will feature a dual-core graphics chip capable of playing 1080p HD video, as well as a high-resolution Retina display. The new iPad is also expected to include dual (front and rear) cameras.

Trong vòng một tháng trước cái chết, trên blog cá nhân của mình, Jung Da Bin có một loạt những bài viết thể hiện sự buồn chán, thất vọng và bế tắc trong công việc. Sự ra đi của nữ diễn viên 27 tuổi này đã để lại nhiều nuối tiếc cho người hâm mộ phim truyền hình xứ Hàn.

Tháng 9/2007, nữ diễn viên Lee Ae Jung mãi ra đi sau gần một năm chiến đấu với căn bệnh u não. Trước khi nhắm mắt, Lee đã trải qua hai cuộc phẫu thuật, sau đó được di chuyển và chạy chữa ở nhiều nơi.

Lim Sung Hoon là thành viên nam duy nhất của nhóm nhạc Turtle. Tháng 4/2008, Lim Sung Hoon đột ngột nhập viện sau khi được quản lý phát hiện bất tỉnh trong nhà riêng. Bất chấp sự nỗ lực của các bác sĩ, Lim Sung Hoon đã vĩnh viễn ra đi ở tuổi 33. Các nhân viên y tế cho biết Lim Sung Hoon đã chết khoảng 5 hoặc 6 tiếng trước khi được đưa tới bệnh viện.

Nam diễn viên Lee Eon (05/02/1981 - 21/08/2008)

Thông tin về cái chết của Lee Eon xuất hiện trên mạng vào sáng sớm ngày 21/8 vừa rồi. Theo kết luận của cảnh sát, cái chết của Lee Eon là do anh mất khả năng điều khiển chiếc xe máy của mình rồi đâm vào thành cầu khiến anh tử nạn ngay tại chỗ.

Bộ phim cuối cùng mà Lee Eon tham gia là phim truyền hình Strongest Chil Woo. Sự ra đi của Lee Eon khiến người hâm mộ và bạn bè nuối tiếc bởi nam diễn viên 27 tuổi hiện là gương mặt đang lên của làng giải trí xứ Hàn trong lĩnh vực điện ảnh và thời trang.

Nam diễn viên Ahn Jae Hwan (25/05/1972 - 08/09/2008)

Ngày 8/9/2008, thi thể của Ahn Jae Hwan được phát hiện trong chiêc xe hơi đỗ trước cửa nhà. Cảnh sát kết luận, Ahn Jae Hwan tự vẫn bằng khí gas, do sức ép nợ nần. Do công việc kinh doanh thất bại, Ahn Jae Hwan hiện đang nợ khoảng 4 triệu USD. Sự ra đi của Ahn Jae Hwan khiến bạn bè, đồng nghiệp và đặc biệt là vợ anh - nữ diễn viên Jung Sun Hee vô cùng đau buồn.

Nửa tháng sau cái chết của Ahn, gia đình anh đã yêu cầu cảnh sát điều tra lại vì hoài nghi cái chết của Ahn không phải là một vụ tự tử đơn thuần. Hiện tại, nguyên nhân cái chết của Ahn Jae Hwan vẫn là một “ẩn số”.

Nữ diễn viên Choi Jin Shil (24/12/1968 - 02/10/2008)

6 giờ sáng ngày 2/10, Choi Ji Shil được mẹ của cô phát hiện treo cổ trong nhà tắm. Ngay lập tức, bà gọi điện báo cảnh sát. Nửa tiếng sau khi thi thể của Choi Ji Shil được phát hiện, báo giới đã tập trung quanh khu nhà cô để dò tìm nguyên nhân.

Phía cảnh sát cho biết, Choi Ji Shil có để lại di bút nhưng từ chối tiết lộ nội dung. Lực lượng cảnh sát đang làm việc để tìm ra nguyên nhân cái chết của nữ diễn viên này. Trước khi nhắm mắt, Choi Ji Shil đang sống cùng mẹ và hai con nhỏ, cô li dị chồng từ năm 2004.
